Giving Tuesday began in 2012 as a global generosity campaign to encourage people to give back to their communities. Each year, Giving Tuesday takes place the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. This year, we ask you to donate to the Burn Foundation of America to support the healing power of family.
The Burn Foundation of America’s mission is to support families through the healing and transition home of patients being served by the Joseph M. Still Burn Center at Doctors Hospital in Augusta, GA. We do this by providing lodging at the Chavis House, providing transportation to and from appointments, providing meals through our Faith Partners Program, and providing anti-scarring garments, prescriptions, mobility devices, and more – all free of charge to the families we serve.
This past year, we provided assistance to 2,631 families of burn and wound patients, spent $227,461 in Direct Patient Services, and provided 8,388 nights of free lodging at the Jeffrey Vaden Chavis House, valued at $746,532.
One such family we helped during this time was the family of Candace and Jayden, Jayden was just 16 years old when he was burned on the majority of his body when a gas can exploded. His brother, Brycen, was also burned during the explosion. Their mother Candace was able to stay at the Chavis House for free for the nearly 8 months that Jayden spent at the Joseph M. Still Burn Center in Augusta, GA. During that time, she was able to be just steps away from Jayden’s room and was able to receive support from the other guests at the Chavis House. Upon Jayden’s discharge from the hospital, we also provided essential items for his recovery such as pill crushers and anti-scarring garments. We have also provided transportation in the form of gas cards and continued free lodging as Jayden returns for his follow-up appointments.
It’s thanks to the generosity of our donors that the Burn Foundation of America is able to provide these important services to the thousands of families like Jayden’s as they navigate life after burns. We strongly believe that all burn patients should be able to experience the healing power of having their loved ones near.
